Iraqi govement forces in Hamreen Mountains in Diyala. Diyala (IraqiNews.com) Nine police personnel, including a commander, were killed and injured in a bomb blast in northeast of Diyala, an official was quoted saying on Wednesday. “A bomb went off, today, targeting police troops in al-Terfaya region, at the outskirts of Jalawla, northeaste Diyala,” Walhan al-Karwi, member of Jalawla municipal council, told Alghad Press. “The blast left two policemen killed and seven others, including a commander and another officer, wounded,” Karwi said. “The victims were taken to forensic medicine department, while the wounded were transferred to hospital for treatment.” Earlier on the day, a local source in Jalawla said seven policemen, including a commander, were killed and injured due to the blast. Speaking to Baghdad Today on Tuesday, the source said, “A joint force from the Iraqi army and police, backed by the U.S.-led inteational coalition, launched an operation earlier to purge islands near Albu Saif village in Mosul from Islamic State remnants.” “The troops found 28 corpses of Islamic State militants and seized a huge amount of ammunition, explosive charges and booby-trapped vehicles during the operation,” the source added. In July, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced liberation of the second largest Iraqi city of Mosul from IS militants, who had captured it in 2014. More than 25000 militants were killed throughout the campaign, which started in October 2016. Since the city was declared free, security troops continue to comb it for hidden IS cells. The media service of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said on its website that fighters of the 51st brigade accomplished its duty purging Makhoul mountains. “Troops managed in seven days to destroy eight tunnels and 20 hideouts with weapons inside. Four militants hiding inside were killed.” Earlier this week, Jabbar al-Maamouri, senior leader with al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said in remarks that the militant group executed some of its members in Salahuddin province for refusing to carry out suicide attacks.
